Abstract: A growing body of research as well as anecdotal evidence suggests tke need to implement a novel approach nutritionally , disseminate nutritional knowledge in order to shift perceptions and improve food security for the Nation of Haiti
First let us define the term Food Security
Food Security by definition means access to foods. In 2004, The United States Department of Agriculture has expanded the definition of food security to include different parameters such as quality, variety and hunger. For our pupose here we will look at accessibility of foods.
Haiti is home to hundred of indigenous foods and therefore foods should be readily available. Indigenous mean native . wild , electric plants foods that grow spontaneously and require little to no human intervention, no irrigation is required. Plants such as Burro bananas, mapou, tamarind, Jute lalo, giromond, amaranth/callaloo, gumbo, malanga, mirliton, breadfruit, avocado, du riz pays, kilimbe, etc... to enumerate a few . These plants survive regardless of the environment or the conditions of the soil, and they have superior nutritionally and biochemically. They provide the required daily essential nutrient, and minerals necessary for children in terms of growth and development and to maintain an active life. They grow in abundance.
Many other Organizations such as Food and Agriculture Organization, and The United Nations also identified four pillars of foods security such as Access, availability, utilization and stability and how these variables can impact on foods security. They have also noted that these factors are vital for the enjoyment of all other rights.
Indigenous foods is key and holds the solution to malnutrition, stunted growth, low cognitive ability especially in children since we are preparing a next generation of future leadees and decisions makers. Moreover, Indigenous foods solve the global water crisis issues, lands degradation, climate change and agricultural diseases that affect hybrid and transgenic crops.
We should pressure our elected officials to shift paradigm and enact policy and promulgate sound laws that address nutrition . Nutritional deficiency can have far reaching implications if not addressed. Instead of politics , we should elect leaders who demonstrate interest in food security and understand our rights to foods. We also need an integrated approach to involve the collective, the farmers, the school of Agronomy, Educators. Nurses, especially Midwives who delivers and provide prenatal care to our future generation., The APN ( Authorite Portuaire National ) /food transportation and the private subsistence small scale farmers . .Nutrition is foremost than Economy and physical infrastructure.
Inaction is tantamount to negligence and failure to act will mean a bigger problem which is our children in their multitudes with stunted growth, and cognitive impairments, and malnutition and poor judgment, unable to exercise sound judgment to elevate Haiti nor contribute to its advancement. A much horrific problem
